A gift was donated to the Gilpin County Education Foundation by Dr. Elaine Joslyn (Welsh), a Gilpin graduate, to create an endowment to support students passionate about science. The endowment was created in honor of Maxine Gray, a teacher who made an impact on Elaine’s life, inspiring her to pursue her career as a medical doctor. Maxine Gray worked as a science teacher at Gilpin County School in the 1950s and 60s.
- The award is $1,000 a year and will be awarded to one graduating senior.
- The award can be used in any way the winner chooses to pursue their passion in science. (ie. College tuition, conference fees, summer camps, etc.)

- How the award is Determined: A selection committee, consisting of Gilpin County science teachers, will use a rubric to determine the most qualified candidate for the award.
