Maxine Gray Science Award

A gift was donated to the Gilpin County Education Foundation by Dr. Elaine Joslyn (Welsh), a Gilpin graduate, to create an endowment to support students passionate about science. The endowment was created in honor of Maxine Gray, a teacher who made an impact on Elaine’s life, inspiring her to pursue her career as a medical doctor. Maxine Gray worked as a science teacher at Gilpin County School in the 1950s and 60s.

  1. The award is $1,000 a year and will be awarded to one graduating senior.
  2. The award can be used in any way the winner chooses to pursue their passion in science. (ie. College tuition, conference fees, summer camps, etc.)
  3. Candidates for this award should be students committed to furthering their study in a science field.
  4. How the award is Determined:  A selection committee, consisting of Gilpin County science teachers, will use a rubric to determine the most qualified candidate for the award.
    1. If scores from the rubric are equal for multiple applicants, overall high school GPA will be used to determine the most qualified applicant.
